MERRILLVILLE — Two surplus park properties with possible commercial value are headed for the auction block on Wednesday.
It’s the second time one of the parks, Hendricks Park, at 3694 W. 80th Ave., will be up for sale. An auction in November 2013 that included the land drew only one bid of $30,000 for the site, far below the $178,000 appraised value that town officials were hoping to get.
The park is about 1.2 acres and is east of Whitcomb Street on the U.S. 30 frontage road. Montessori Academy of Northwest Indiana is adjacent to the park. Owner Dawn Tasher submitted the lone bid for the land in 2013.
The second site is the undeveloped Union Park, southwest of 71st Place and Broadway Avenue. That parcel is about two-thirds of an acre and has appraised for $54,000.
Town attorney John Bushemi said town officials hope to realize the appraised value of the two properties by selling them at auction, but Merrillville has the authority to sell the land for less if officials believe that’s required.
The proceeds from the sales of the sites will be returned to the park department.
The auction is being conducted by Niemeyer Auction Service & Realty and takes place at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the town hall, 7820 Broadway Ave. For more information about the auction, call (219) 313-2709 or (219) 696-7212.
