GARY — A wild shootout as the Sin City Desciples’ annual cabaret concluded early Sunday left five people wounded, one critically, police said.
“One group just started shooting in the air, then others starting shooting,” Sgt. Thomas Pawlak said.
No one was arrested, and Detective Cpl. Michael Barnes said he has not located witnesses who could identify the shooters.
“No one saw anything,” Barnes said.
The two-day party was held at the club’s headquarters at 13th Avenue and Virginia Street.
Police recovered dozens of shell casings from at least four different-sized bullets, Pawlak said.
When police arrived, “It was a total traffic jam; the ambulances couldn’t get through,” he added.
Medics transported one victim; the others were driven to the hospital by family or friends, police said.
Previous police administrations would deploy the SWAT team and additional officers for crowd control at the annual event.
This year, no extra officers were assigned.
After a second, unrelated shooting occurred in Glen Park, Lake County police assisted by responding to calls in Gary for a few hours.
The critical victim is Kenon Shivers, 32, of Gary, whose arm was nearly severed from the gunshot.
Also wounded were Derrick Ryles, 22, of Merrillville, shot in the thigh; Tyrice Calhoun, 31, Gary, shot in the arm and buttocks; Sharonda Ballard, 35, Merrillville, shot in the back; and Abram Williams, 30, Merrillville, shot in the stomach.
Jeff Morgan was wounded outside Prestige in Glen Park.
