Two drivers face drug and alcohol charges after being involved in separate crashes Friday in unincorporated Porter County.
Ryan Cupp, 23, admitted to police that he fled after hitting several mailboxes along Brandywine Road, in the Lakes of the Four Seasons subdivision, so he could hide his drugs at home before officers found him. Cupp, who lives in the subdivision, also said he smoked marijuana, took generic Xanax and drank two alcoholic beverages before the crash at about 1:20 a.m. Friday, according to the police report.
LOFS security guards caught up to Cupp before he could hide the remaining marijuana and pills, for which he does not have a prescription. Cupp was arrested for felony possession of a controlled substance and several misdemeanors, including possession of marijuana, impaired driving and leaving the scene of a crash.
William Isen, 47, of Iowa, was arrested while on his way to work at the Lake County Fair — even though he was going east on U.S. 30, away from Lake County — when he crashed into the back of a minivan at about 5:45 p.m. Friday. A witness told police Isen’s silver Chevrolet Aveo had been weaving erratically before the crash; at one point the car hit the median and did a 360-degree turn, but kept going until it rear-ended the minivan near west County Road 250. Police found two open bottles of alcohol — vodka and watermelon Pucker — on the car’s floorboard and 24 pills of a prescription painkiller, not prescribed to Isen, in the glove compartment. Isen was arrested for felony possession of a legend drug and drunken driving.
