PORTAGE — The Super Kmart at U.S. 6 and Willowcreek Road is slated to closed in April after its liquidation sale winds down.
Kmart corporate officials told the Indiana Department of Workforce Development last week that the store will close permanently on April 8.
The terminations of about 209 employees will begin April 1, according to the letter sent by Margie Lynch, divisional vice president.
Kmart’s manager, Bill Seubert, said the store is in the midst of a liquidation sale. Once open 24 hours, the store now opens at 7 a.m. and closes at 10 p.m., he said.
There’s no closing date yet for the St. John Kmart, also part of the group of 80 nationwide being closed by parent company Sears Holding Corp. to raise cash.
Meijer Inc. announced earlier this month that it purchased the Portage Kmart site. A spokesman would not disclose details of the sale, other than the company was interested in it as a potential location for a 24-hour Meijer store. The store would be Meijer’s first in Porter County.
