CROWN POINT — The state team regional pairings don’t mean much because you pretty much know who you have to beat to be the champs.

Now, No. 2 Crown Point and No. 5 Merillvile know when.

The pairings for the 17th and final Indiana state team wrestling tournament hit the street last week and the big moment is 8 p.m. next Wednesday.

That’s when Duneland Athletic Conference champion Crown Point meets DAC meet champion Merrillville to decide who will represent Northwest Indiana at the eight-team state finals.

Assuming all the favored teams win this Saturday in sectional competition, I would suspect that Merrillville figuratively drew the short straw.

The Pirates will have to win a semifinal matchup with No. 17 Portage in the 6 p.m. semifinals before they can get their rematch with Crown Point.

Revenge is a pointless motivation when you are one match away from the state finals, but let the record show that Merrillville ended CP’s four-year run as DAC Meet champion on Jan. 14 while CP handed the Pirates their only loss 36-14 on Jan. 4.

Lowell and Hanover Central have little chance to advance beyond Saturday’s CP Sectional as a team but both will have multiple shots at sectional championship this weekend.

Alex Mavros of Hanover should qualify for ther regional at 145 pounds but he is a heavy underdog against CP”s Jason Tsirtsis, the top-ranked wrestler in the state.

Kenny Hughes of Lowell is the Northwest Crossroads champ at 160 and he’ll eventually face CP’s Dusty Schurg Saturday.

DAC champ Tyler Kral (220 pounds) is undefeated and a big favorite to win the sectional crown agauinst rivals like Lowell’s Tyler Wright.

Kral’s younger brother Morgan Kral (182 pounds) could join him with sectional titles if he overcomes challengers like Hanover Central’s Tyler Scott.

The big battle at heavyweight could pit Lowell’s Northwest Crossroads Conference champ Scott Pitrowski against Crown Point’s DAC champion Josh Swope.

The top four finsihers at the sectional Saturday advance to the individual regional which will also be held at Crown Point on Feb. 4
