CROWN POINT — As the new president of the Crown Point City Council Andrew Kyres, D-3rd, is looking for the city to continue projects that the city is already working on.

“We need to be sure where we stand and add to the quality of life for our residents and visitors,” said Kyres.

Kyres works for First Midwest Bank, which has two locations in the city. “The bank always supports my public service commitments. It’s an honor to serve,” Kyres said.

The use of closed-door executive sessions will be limited to personnel and legal issues that have to be discussed in a closed session. Otherwise all issues will be discussed at the public form. Kyres believes that everything that the city does should be conducted in full view of the public.

“I represent Crown Point on the shared Ethics Commission,” he said, referring to a regional group of elected officials. “We are acutely aware of the provisions that are exemplified in the ‘Open Door’ laws.”

“Our council works very well together,” Kyres said. “The issues of Crown Point and how they impact our citizens supersede any (political party differences) since I have been on the council.”

For a number of years he was the only Democrat on the seven-member council. He added, “It is never an issue or an obstacle with legislation, discussions and outcomes.”

The city council is now made up of four Republicans and three Democrats.

Kyres has always supported the city’s efforts in forming a Fire Territory that would include the unincorporated areas of Center Township.

“The council approved the ordinance unanimously (last year),” said Kyres, adding, “I believe we will continue following in that issue.”
