CROWN POINT — I understand how Crown Point has lost to class 4A No. 10 Lake Central twice.

LC (11-2) is one of the state’s best teams.

But even the Bulldogs probably can’t figure out how Crown Point has now lost to Michigan City twice.

The Bulldogs, who were defeated 66-60 at Michigan City back in December fell again 63-60 to the Wolves last Saturday evening in a “snow-game,” postponed from Friday due to winter weather.

To be fair to Crown Point, the Wolves (8-7), who haven’t been at full strngth for every game in the first 75 percent of the sseason, had all hands on deck Saturday.

Senior Jabbar Washington, who had served a three-game suspension, returned to the MC lineup with 19 points, leading a 14-4 run that gave the Wolves a 17-12 first quarter lead. Washington, a 6-foot-2 guard, scored 16 in MC’s earlier win over the Bulldogs.

The Wolves led by 10 points in the second period but CP junior Sean Kelly scored 11 of his career-high 17 in the second period to close the gap to 33-30 at halftime.

Crown Point led 34-33 but Michigan City, which has handed Lake Central its only Duneland Athletic Conference loss, scored 11 of the next 13 points and never trailed after that, even though they did pull within 59-58 and 61-60 with 1:38 left.

Washington scored to make it 63-60 with 45 seconds left and CP’s Kelly missed a shot in the final 10 seconds at the Bullodgs final chance.

Michigan City shot over the CP defense, sinking 9-of-15 from three-point range in the key stat of the game.

Sophomore Bret Barclay, who scored 25 against Michigan City in December, led CP (4-8) Saturday night with 18 points. Tommy Bardeson, the Bulldogs leading scorer, added 14.

For Crown Point, this was the fifth time this season the Bulldogs have lost a game by six points or fewer. Crown Point has allowed 60 points or more eight times in 12 games and the Bulldogs are 0-8 in those games.

CP travels to Valparaiso (11-2) Friday night and hosts Boone Grove (5-5) Saturday.
