CROWN POINT — Nobody in south Lake County can be too unhappy with the draw last Sunday night for the 37th Indiana State Girls basketball Tournament.
Boone Grove? That’s a different story altogether.
First up will be the Crown Point Bulldogs who have the misfortune to play on opening night, meaning they have just Friday, Saturday and Monday to get ready after Thursday night’s final regular season game with Merrilville.
But CP can’t complain. It drew the host team, Portage, a squad CP has knocked off twice already.
The Lady Bulldogs also got an added bonus. Merrillville (19-0) and Michiagn City (14-5) are on the other side of the bracket. CP can only play one or the other, not both. And they will see neither the Pirates nor Wolves until the championship game the night of Feb. 11.
Crown Point got as good a draw as they could possibly have received and they should be encouraged by their chances to win the schools first sectional title since 2001.
You won’t hear many complaints from Lowell, either. The Devils drew a quarterfinal game with Highland (8-10) next Wednesday night at 6 p.m. The Devils defeated Highland just 46-42 in december but are the better team and should advance to a match with either Munster or Lake Central. LC topped Lowell 55-53 on Jan. 17 and the Devils would probably like to play that game again.
Lowell led by 14 before losing by two on that night.
Hanover Central should also have no complaints. The Lady Cats drew a bye in the first round of the six-team Kankakee Valley sectional.
True, they will probably face the host school Friday night Feb. 10 when they open play in the semifinals. But HC, which lost 57-53 to KV at KV in December, had to know they’d need to beat Kankakee Valley (11-9) to get out of the Kankakee Valley Sectional.
The plusses are two-fold here. HC does not have to make three trips to Jasper County and they don’t have a school night game.
The Lady Cats get to practice all week and give it their best shot. Injuries have limited playing time for sophomore guard Rylie Singleton and the longer it is before Hanover begins the playoffs the better it is for them,
Not everybody is happy with their draw.
Boone Grove could have gotten a bye in the six-team Class 2A North Judson Sectional and they could have drawn an easy team.
The PCC champion Wolves got neither. Boone drew Rochester (15-5), a strong squad that ended the season ona six-game winning streak.
If the Wolves are to win their first sectional since 2008, it’s going to take three long rides to Starke County and three difficult games to get it done.
Merrillville also got the short end of the sectional stick. Nobody’s crying for an undefeated team but the Pirates will have to win three times in four nights to win the school’s sixth sectional championship and Merrillville is a small, fast team that has to run and press to win. Fatigue may be a factor for them late in the week.
Looking at potential regional matchups, Lowell could not play Merrillville again until the Valparaiso regional championship game and Merrillville wouldn’t be Lowell’s biggest problem.
The Class 4A Munster Sectional winner faces the winner of the Goshen sectional, probably either Warsaw (15-4) or Northridge (15-5).
The winner of the Portage Sectional faces the winner at Mishawaka, where second-ranked Penn (19-1) is a big favorite.
If Hanover Central were to win the 3A KV Sectional in this, its first year in Class 3A, its introduction to this level of play will get very real very quickly. Should HC win the sectional at KV, the Lady Cats would go back to Jasper County for the regional, which is set for Rensselaer High School on Feb. 18. The winner at KV faces the winner of the 3A West Lafeyette Sectional which will probably be sixth ranked Benton Central (15-4). There’s no easy 3A regional matchups possible. If Griffith wins the Class 3A Griffith Sectional, as expected, they would probably draw 3A No. 3 Northwood (18-3) in the Renssealer regional semifinals.
