CROWN POINT — The best thing about the swimming sectional is that even if your team loses, a lot of the girls on it can still win. Its a beautiful thing.
Saturday, Munster won the girls swim sectional again, topping CP 440-404 in team points.
But who cares? Crown Point won five individual events and one relay sending a small bus-full of girls to the state finals this Friday and Saturday at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis.
It’s hard to be unhappy with winning six events and reaching the state finals in three others.
“Our goal is to finish two relays in the top five,” said coach Bryan Angerman. “Individual-wise, Aly Tetzloff, who knows where she could be. She’s got a shot to be in the top five. Hannah Raspopovich, she’ll be (seeded) in the top-16 but she was not rested yet so next week will be her time to shine.”
Nobody wins the state girls swim team title but Carmel (25 consecutive state titles) anyway, so it’s all about individual achievement this coming Saturday. And CP’s qualifying eight events for the finals gives them all the chances they could want to excel.
“I have a lot of confidence in what’s going to happen next week,” Angerman said. “The girls focused today. A couple were a little sick but we’ll get that taken care of and we’ll go downstate and represent the region with a top-10 team finish.”
“Some of the girls train for this week,” said Hannah Raspopovich, who will swim in three state finals events. “Some train more for next week. Both of our relays should be really good. Could be in the top eight.”
Raspopovich also felt she had more in her than she showed Saturday, even though she helped CP advance in four events and won the breaststroke.
“I wasn’t happy with the times in my events,” she said. “I didn’t totally train for this weekend.”
CP freshman Aly Tetzloff continued her highly succesful debut season, winning the backstroke and the butterfly (in sectional record times) plus reaching the finals in two relay events.
“She’s amazing,” Raspoovich said. “Her size helps her but she has that drive within her. I don’t know how she does it.”
SECTIONAL NOTES: Lowell’s highest finish was fifth place in the 400 free relay and the 200 medley relay.
Michelle Wood was sixth in the 200.
The sectional championship was the 24th for Munster. Munster freshman sprinter Mary Beth Blocher won the 50 and the 100 in sectional record times.
Crown Point’s Hannah Raspopovich is moving to the final in four events, and her efforts next week in Indianapolis will bring a state finals end to the Raspopovich athletic era at Crown Point.
“I’m the last one,” Hannah said. “My sister Gabby played softball and now she plays softball at St. Joseph’s college.
“My sister Molly is the oldest. She’s swimmng at Akron which is where I’m going. And you probably know my cousins (Jake, Zach and Josh, all football quarterbacks) at Merrillville.”
“The cost is a big deal,” Hannah explained, “because between athetics and swimming I got a full ride. It just felt right and with her being there it felt comfortable. I already know half the team. It’s just the right place for me.”
The16-team girls swim sectional and the regional wrestling finals went off without major problems at Crown Point High School last weekend. At mid-afternoon the parking lot was not full. The wrestling meet ended about 3 p.m. while the swimming was over at 4:30 p.m.
In truth, the school is so large that you could have attended the swimming meet and never seen any of the 100 wrestlers or 500 plus fans in the main gym.
