Hot dogs heading north

Updated: February 21, 2012 4:12PM

CROWN POINT — Nickolas Tournis asked for and received permission to run a hot dog cart on the city’s north side. He would like to place the cart at either NAPPA Service Auto Parts on North Main Street or at Phil and Son’s key shop on Summit Street.

The actual site will depend on where he is received the best, he said, but he only has one cart so he would only be at one location at a time.

Many people that work along Summit are hoping that he goes in that direction. While being at NAPPA would give him great visibility the area is filled with fast food places with drive through service.

At Phil and Son’s the number of drive through fast food eating-places is far more limited.

The Board of Public Works gave approval to his venture on Feb. 8.

In other business, the board also granted permission to the Crown Point Knights of Columbus to sell Tootsie Rolls on Saturday, May 12.

This fundraiser is to benefit people in Northwest Indiana with intellectual disabilities. Tootsie Rolls will be sold between the hours of 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. The Knights in their yellow and red aprons will be at various intersections around the city.

Two Harley Davidson police motorcycles were purchased from the lowest bidder, Calumet Harley-Davidson, for a total cost to the Police Department of $16,782. This is part of the Harley-Davidson’s Police motorcycle trade-in program.

Harley has been working with police departments around the country for a number of years with their trade-in policy.

“The upgrade to our Police Motorcycle Division was part of our 2012 overall planning,” Police Chief Pete Land told the board.

The department will be trading in the two 2006 models with the purchase of two 2012 FLHTP’s Electra Glide police motorcycles.

The board also agreed to the purchase of a new ambulance for the Fire-Rescue Department. The money for the purchase comes from the city’s cumulative capital fund, and according to Fire Chief Greg DeLor the cash is on hand.

This will be moving the 1991 ambulance that had been purchased by the Crown Point Volunteer Firefighters, Inc. The new ambulance will allow the department to rotate the three ambulances and will extend the life of all three vehicles.

The bid by Cross Roads Med Tech comes to $223,914.
