LOWELL — When you have trouble winning close games, the immediate solution is to win a game by a lot.
That’s what Lowell (1-4) did last Friday as Zach Van Hook scored 30 points in a 54-38 victory, the Devils first win of the season.
Van Hook, who has scored 140 points in Lowell’s first five games, led a Lowell attack that increased the lead all night.
The Devils led 44-27 after three quarters over a Morton (0-5) sqaud that has played all year without leading scorer Rayan Elabed, who is ineligible until next month at least.
Lowell junior guard Billy Barker scored 14, including four three-point baskets, as the Devils got into the win column after four losses by a combined total of 22 points (including three losses by a combined total of eight points) to start the season.
Van Hook scored 39 in a 53-49 loss at Gary West Side on Nov. 27.
Lowell lost a 42-29 halftime lead earlier last week and fell 73-70 in overtime to Gavit on Dec. 4.
Shalon Bell was 7-of-8 from the line in the fourth quarter and overtime to boost the Gladiators (2-1).
The Devils will play at Hobart (1-3) Friday night with the junior varsity game beginning at 6 p.m.
