CROWN POINT — A shorthanded CP squad topped Lake Central 42-20 Thursday night as Austin Torres (106), Josh Fuqua (126), Tyler Burlison (145) and Morgan Kral (195) all recorded pins.
The victory kept the Bulldogs on line to battle arch-rival Merrillville for the championship of the Duneland Athletic Conference on Wednesday, Jan. 2
The Bulldogs were without Riley Akers (103), Dusty Schurg (171), Quentin Klingberg (285) and Brett Irvin (120), but still won nine of 14 weight classes.
The Indians’ star Gelon Robinson won 20-5 over CP’s Steve Potosky, but he did notget a pin fall.
The Bulldogs recorded four pins and three major decisions to bounce back from the 34-28 loss to Franklin on Dec. 8.
Crown Point won the annual Carnahan Invitational Saturday on the CP mats, rolling up six weight class titles and 248.5 team pooints to top second place Lyons Township (190), a large Illinois school.
Josh Fuqua (15-0) stayed unbeaten by topping Lyons’ Brian Krueger in the finals.
Sophomore Morgan Kral (20-0) won at 195 pounds over Lyons’ Justin Fuller.
Hanover Central junior Steven Micic (13-0) won at 113 pounds and was named the meet’s MVP.
Micic was 48-0 and the Indiana state champion last season.
