WINFIELD — Councilman Jim Simmons suggested at the Dec. 11 Town Council meeting that with the growth of the community it is time to have four of the five council members represent a particular geographic area and the fifth council person represent the town at large.
As of the election of 2012 there are four precincts in the town. But Simmons noted that it was possible that, in the last municipal election, all council members could have been from the same neighborhood. It turned out that four of the currently seated council members are from different precincts.
Simmons said he would all voters to continue to vote for all five council seats, but that those seats be split into districts to ensure all parts of town are represented.
This would be similar to the way people are elected in Munster, Lowell and Cedar Lake.
Unlike some of the older communities the Winfield Town Council will not have staggered elections. Everyone will be up for election at the same time as they currently are now. That can give the town a completely new council every four years.
Simmons asked that the council discuss the issue at its study session at 6 p.m. Jan. 8, 2013.
