MERRILLVILLE — It’s probably hard to read about how Crown Point played another close basketball game, battling valiantly only to lose by a couple of points.
Imagine how it must be to play in those games.
Crown Point held a 16-point first quarter lead on arch-rival Merrillville last Friday night and maintained a seven-point edge on its Duneland Athletic Conference rivals with 4:10 to go in the game.
But the full court press of the Pirates (13-1, 11-0 DAC) caused enough turnovers, and Merrilville senior BJ Jenkins hit a short shot with four seconds to go to give the Pirates a 60-59 victory.
For Crown Point (5-11, 2-9 DAC), it was the third one-point loss of the season and CP’s seventh defeat by 10 points or fewer.
Senior Tommy Bardeson, who led all scorers with 22 points, hit two foul shots with 25 seconds to go to give CP a 59-58 lead. But Jenkins, who scored 19 for the home team, took a one-on-one opportunity to the basket for the wining shot.
In December, CP led Merrillville 21-8 in the first quarter before eventually losing 72-65.
The Bulldogs play back-to-back Thursday night games in LaPorte tonight and at Portage on Friday, Feb. 14. CP hosts Lowell on Feb. 16.
The draw for the basketball state tournament will be announced Feb. 17
