CPHS Latin Club is state champion

Thirty-one members of the Crown Point Latin Club joined more than 200 students from 14 schools at the 60th Annual Indiana Junior Classical League State Convention March 15 and 16 at Indiana State University in Terre Haute.

Crown Point students earned more than 50 first-place awards among a variety of awards and earned the overall state championship.

Three students received Individual Achievement Trophies in Academic Testing: Renee Brigham, Kristina Mihajlovic and Ahmed Shaaban. Two received Individual Achievement Trophies in Graphic Arts: Alex Baloski and Sarah DeMars. And three received Individual Achievement Trophies in Creative Arts: Thomas Cooper, Michael Keller and Josh Mazur.

In addition, Kristina Mihajlovic was also awarded a $500 IJCL Scholarship to continue her study of the Classics at Indiana University.

In the Certamen trivia competition, all three Crown Point teams advanced to the final rounds, where the advanced team returned home as state champions and the novice and intermediate teams placed second.

Advanced team members included Renee Brigham, Thomas Cooper, Sarah DeMars, Michael Keller, Kristina Mihajlovic, Susan Reed, and Andie Wahlberg.

The novice team members were Alex Baloski, Natalie Brigham, Emily Fender, and Susie Szymanski. The intermediate team members were Brennen Chaussey, Josh Mazur, Ryan Sizemore, Morgan Stofko, John Verdegan, and Anna Werkowski.

Michael Keller, the 2012-2013 IJCL 2nd vice president, was elected as the 2013-2014 IJCL president. Renee Brigham was elected as the 2013-2014 IJCL Secretary. And Thomas Cooper was elected as the 2013-2014 IJCL Parliamentarian.

Several CPHS alumnae and current seniors were elected to positions in the Indiana Senior Classical League: Brittany Krowiarz, vice president; Brandi Collins, treasurer; and Bekah Maddack, parliamentarian.

For the fifth consecutive year, Crown Point placed first in the Helen Wampler Spirit Competition. The entry was compiled by Kristina Mihajlovic.

Crown Point also earned first place in the publicity contest; its entry was compiled by Anna Werkowski. It placed second with for local chapter publication the Tempus Canis, edited by Samantha Konicki, and third for chapter t-shirt, designed by Becka Burke.

Crown Point placed second in Delegate Spirit (Kathryn Szymanski) and Scrapbook (Sarah DeMars) contests and third in the Sharon Gibson Community Service Award (Anna Werkowski).

The next level of competition for the club is the National Junior Classical League Convention during the last week of July at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas.
