Cedar Lake Police had a busy time from 11:30 p.m. March 30 to just before 2 a.m. March 31.

At about 11:30 p.m. March 30, Powers was pulled over in his white pickup truck for traffic violations in the 14100 block of Morse Street. According to a press release by Interim Chief of Police Gerry Smith, an officer had observed several indicators that the pickup truck was being driven by a drunk driver.
Powers was pulled over and given a series of field sobriety tests, all of which he failed. He was going to be transferred to the Cedar Lake police station and as a matter of routine the officer began to inventory the suspect’s vehicle.
Allegendly found in plain sight and on the front seat was a cellophane cigarette rapper containing five pills that were later identified as 10 mg tablets of hydrocodone, a controlled substance. The breath test was done at the Cedar Lake station house and then Powers was taken to the Lake County Jail.
Just 2½ hours later, officers obvserved Dees headed southbound on Cline Avenue in a silver-colored pickup. While passing an unmarked car in the 11900 block of southbound Cline Avenue, he allegedly crossed the double yellow lines.
According to Smith, the pick-up accelerated to speeds of more than 75 mph in a 30 mph zone. Dees stopped after a brief chase, according to Smith.
The suspect proceeded to the intersection of Vermillion and Hilltop Street. At Hilltop Street the vehicle turned southbound on Hilltop and then quickly eastbound onto 127th Avenue and into a driveway, where police officers ordered Dees from the vehicle and took him into custody without any further incident.
