The Dunes Summer Theatre in Michiana Shores has announced its 2012 season, and it includes some surprises.
The season will kick off with the hilarious and irreverent “Avenue Q,” which takes puppets, muppets and political correctness and turns them all inside out. This is the first time this challenging show has been produced by any of the theaters in Northwest Indiana. “Avenue Q” runs June 8-24.
The revolutionary musical “1776” is up next. The show centers on John Adams and his attempts to persuade others to sign the Declaration of Independence and runs June 29-July 15.
William Shakespeare’s play “The Tempest” will run July 27-Aug. 5.
The musical “9 to 5” is another Northwest Indiana first. With music and lyrics by Dolly Parton and book by Patricia Resnick, the story is based on the hit 1980 film of the same title.
The 1930s social commentary play “The Women” will run Aug. 31-Sept. 16. Written by Clare Booth Luce, this “comedy of manners” takes us into the power struggle of Manhattan’s high-society.
The “Rocky Horror Show” will return Oct. 5-Oct. 14 for some campy pre-Halloween fun.
Interspersed between the plays and musicals are “Cabaret Weekends” that will feature smaller variety-type shows and other acts.
Dunes Summer Theatre is placing an emphasis on fundraising this year, with a number of benefits, including an event at Shoreline Brewery in March, “West Side Story” in concert at the New Buffalo Performing Arts Center in April and a “celebrity” fashion show event in early June.
In the fall, there will be two more fund-raising events in Michigan City: the Vampire Ball at the Lubeznik Center and an event in December at the Shady Creek Winery .
‘The Cherry Orchard’
The Chicago Street Theatre in Valparaiso has announced its cast for a production of Anton Checkhov’s “The Cherry Orchard,” running April 13-28.
On the eve of the Russian revolution, Madame Ranevsky and her daughters learn that their privileged lifestyle has come to an end as the beloved cherry orchard slips from their grasp.
The cast features Mary DeBoer, Jasmine Lake, Kelsey Dougherty, Grant Fitch, Eric Brant, Kevin Doran, Tony Balsamo, Kelley Weisenbacher, Matt Stinett, Jessica Howe, David Pera, Patrick Pohrte and Jim Drader.
Chicago Street Theatre is at 154 W. Chicago St. in Valparaiso. Call 464-1636 for more information.
