The holiday theater season is in full swing this weekend with a wide variety of plays and musicals to choose from.

Rogers and Hammerstein’s classic musical “The Sound of Music” continues this weekend at the Chicago Street Theatre, 154 W. Chicago St., Valparaiso.

A family favorite, the show includes many familiar songs including “So Long, Farewell,” “Do, Re, Mi,” “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” and “My Favorite Things.”

“The Sound of Music” follows the Von Trapp family as they experience the upheaval of their country at the beginning of World War II. When a postulant who proves too high-spirited for the religious life is dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children, her growing rapport with the youngsters, coupled with her generosity of spirit, gradually captures the heart of their widowed father and they marry.

More than 100 children auditioned for seven roles in the play. Choosing the cast was “our biggest challenge,” co-director Kristen Bruss said.

The cast includes Christine Marilyn Parry, Richard Castleton, LuAnne Pezel, Jessica Rodriguez, Daniel Barajas, Maddie Blaney, Jack Schwartz, Ruthann Marfoe, Isabel Blaney, Maddi Ames, Andrew Flasch, Dana Samardzich, Matt Stinnett, Andrea Bertsch, Caroline Rau Geldernick, Daena Sisk, Rande Dawson, Allison Michna, Heather Ames and Joy Hathaway.

“The Sound of Music” runs through Dec. 15. Call the box office at 464-1636 for reservations.
