Dr. Wallace: My heart is breaking. My one and only true love dumped me for a girl who really doesn’t care a lot for him. She is a former good friend of mine. We became enemies when she accused me of stealing a piece of jewelry from her mother when I slept over at her house. Then she really did me in; she stole my boyfriend away from me only because of spite. Every time I see them holding hands and smiling at one another, I want to cry.

Even though my heart is breaking, I’m through with this guy. I wouldn’t go out with him again if he begged me while on his knees. Still, I’m disappointed and very depressed. I had eight months invested in this guy, all for naught.

I know the old proverb says, “It’s better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all,” but I’m still hurting. What can I do to overcome this unhappy feeling?

Nameless, Oakland, Calif.

Nameless: Most proverbs were written by wise and learned folk. This French proverb answers your question: “The way to get over a broken heart is to go out and get it broken again.”
