Dr. Wallace: I usually agree with your opinions, but when it comes to attending high school reunions, I totally disagree with your “all the graduates should attend.” I wasn’t a popular student. I wore glasses, was overweight and had a severe case of acne. I guess I was what they called me — a nerd.

My only so-called friend was a bigger nerd than I was. I’ve lost weight and my face cleared up. I’m married and the father of two healthy, beautiful daughters. I would never want to see all those “beautiful” cheerleaders, gifted athletes, pep squad members and all the rest of the snobs who “shined me on.”

Duke, Houston, Texas

Duke: I can understand why you have little desire to mingle with former students who called you a nerd and who contributed to the distaste you have for your high school experience. But times and thoughts change. Your years after high school have been wonderful. It’s time to share your good fortune with former students.

I know for certain many would enjoy seeing you again and hearing about your successful life after high school. Go to your next reunion with the thought of having an enjoyable time. It could be that you will have a miserable experience and become positively sure you will never again attend another high school reunion. But you could have a great time and make new friends. You don’t have anything to lose. Give it a try!
