Dr. Wallace: I’m 16 and so is my boyfriend, and we love each other. Last week, he found out that he’ll be moving to Ireland because his dad’s work is transferring him to Dublin. He’ll be moving in a month.
He wants us to continue being a couple and not date others. He says he will be returning to Boston when he is 18. All my friends are telling me to stay true to him because he’s such a neat guy, but I don’t think I want to sit at home and wait two years before I even see him again. I’ve been giving this a lot of thought. I’d really be upset if I agreed to wait for him and then he stops contacting me, or he e-mails me that he met this “wonderful Irish girl” and is going to take her out.
I’m really leaning toward telling him to have a full social life in Ireland, and I’ll do the same in Boston. I’ll tell him I love him, and if we both feel the same way about each other when he returns, we can renew our relationship then. I know you’ll agree with me, but I’ll feel much better if I see it in writing.
T.J.: You are a very wise and mature young lady. I agree with you 100 percent.
