‘American Rex’ is coming to Chicago Street Theatre

The Chicago Street Theatre in Valparaiso will present Joshua Rollin’s play “American Rex” Feb. 1-16.
Directed by Jonni Pera and Traci Brant, the story examines the world of West Virginia coal miners as they struggle to keep their land as big coal companies continue to blast it out from under them.
Rollins is a graduate of the School at Steppenwolf in Chicago and lives in Colorado. He worked with and advised the Chicago Street Theatre’s directors to help them prepare for this production and will attend opening night.
The cast features David Pera, Jim Henry, Jason Utesch, Jason Kaplan, Kelly Price, Carly Smith, Josh Eggleston, Daena Sisk and Dona Henry.
This production is not recommended for those under 18. The script contains nudity, adult language and situations, gun shots, and drug use.

The Footlight Players of Michigan City have announced auditions for their upcoming production of Tennessee Williams’ classic drama “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” at 2 p.m. Feb. 2 and 6 p.m. Feb. 3.
The play will be directed by Steve Rohe and has a cast of five men and three women.
Williams won the 1955 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his sweeping epic of Big Daddy Pollitt’s family in crisis as the Southern way of life crumbles under the weight of its own history.
The play was adapted to the screen in 1958 in a film that featured Elizabeth Taylor, Paul Newman and Burl Ives.
The production will run April 5-14.

YMCA Jazz and Blues Festival
The Valparaiso YMCA’s annual Jazz and Blues Festival to help raise funds for its Changing Lives campaign will feature many musicians and vocalists familiar to local theater audiences.
The festival — featuring The City Lights Band and Tonal Attitude — will runs from 6:30 p.m.-midnight Feb. 2 at the Porter County Expo Center, 215 Division Road, Valparaiso.
The entertainers also include vocalists Michele Gustin and Buddy Goetsch, plus musicians Chris Holmquest, Mark Jackett, Bill Jenkins and others.
The campaign funds support and financial assistance and scholarship programs for low-income families and more than 16 area group homes and human service agencies such as Opportunity Enterprises, The Caring Place, Hilltop House, Porter-Starke Services, Christian Haven Homes and Shults-Lewis Home.
