Opera House names its cast for ‘Gypsy’

The Memorial Opera House has announced the cast of its upcoming production of “Gypsy.”

Based on the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, “Gypsy” is the Vaudeville-era story of an aggressive stage mother who pushes her children to be stars or pushes them away. The music and lyrics by Jules Styne and Stephen Sonheim include “Let Me Entertain You,” “Some People,” “All I Need Is the Girl,” Everything’s Coming Up Roses” and “Together Wherever We Go.”

The Memorial Opera House production will be directed by Scot MacDonald, with vocal direction by Chris Stalbaum and choreography by Kathleen Dominiak-Treasure.

The cast includes Adam Woolever, Allison Michna, Ana Fry, Becky Bongard, Christina Pals, Colin Snider, Isabel Blaney, Jeff DeBoer, Joy Hathaway, Katie Marak, Kelsey Dougherty, Kirstin Henry, Lisa Woodruff, Maisy Fry, Mark McColley, Mary Herrod, Michael Ohm, Michael Radford, Nathaniel Wasko, Pat Pohrte, Ruthie Marfoe, Shannon Stutler and Trinidad Snider.

‘Almost, Maine’

The Valparaiso Theatrical Co. will present the comedy “Almost, Maine” May 3-12.

The play, written by John Cariani and directed by Joe Culley, has a cast that features Beverly Adkins, Zack Alfredson, Amy Aurelio, Bill Carns, Linda Didelot, Ed Griffith, Carla Heiser, Michael “Doc” Kuhn, John Lattuada, Eric McCann, William Milhans, Elizabeth Molchan, Trish Neary, Kerianne Valuckis, Matt Valuckis and Donna Rettew.

The comedy is set in the fictional town of Almost, Maine, on a cold, clear, moonless winter night. Something is amiss as the residents find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and often hilarious ways.

Performances will be held at The Buggy Wheel Pavilion at the Porter County Expo Center, 215 E. Division Road, Valparaiso. Call 309-6794 for reservations or more information.

‘The Graduate’

The Chicago Street Theatre in Valparaiso will present “The Graduate” April 12-27.

Based on Mike Nichols’ classic 1967 film that starred Dustin Hoffman, Katherine Ross and Anne Bancroft, the stage version follows a recent college graduate as he tries to unravel the mysteries of life as a young adult. Trouble comes when he becomes embroiled in an affair with his father’s business partner and then falls in love with his mistress’ daughter.

Directed by May Bird and Martin Weisenbacher, the cast includes Dean Perrine, Glenn Silver, Amy Johnson-Sobek, Chuck Gessert, Barbara Malangoni, Megan Lothamer, Lynette Kucharski, Kimberly Meyne, Jeff Schultz, Jim Drader, Patricia Schulz, Rodney Thornton, Mary Jo Nuland and Kirby Thomas.

‘Merchant of Venice’

The Crown Point Community Theatre will hold auditions for William Shakespeare’s “The Merchant of Venice” at 7 p.m. April 8 and 9.

Those auditioning are asked to prepare a brief 30-second to 1-minute monologue. It can be comedic or dramatic. There will also be cold readings from the script.

The production will be directed by Jacob Barber and will run May 31-June 9. Call the theater at 805-4255 for more information.
