Where are you, Dorothy Williams?
Laddie, your little black and white pomeranian dog, would like to know. This poor baby was found by two men Thursday and brought to Lucky Stop, a convenience store on County Road 500W and U.S. 30 in Valparaiso.
He was found with his fur matted with the accrued dirt and grime of a troubled past and he is very frightened. But, thanks to you, there was a 2011 rabies tag on his collar. We called the local veterinarian’s phone on the registration tag and learned of your address somewhere off U.S. 6 in Valparaiso and a phone number. The phone is disconnected and I really doubt you are home.
This little dog is miles away from his first home. So, what did you do? Was he found by someone else who kept him for a year? Did you give him away and forget to check the credentials of his new owners? Did you lose your financial resources and just couldn’t take care of him? What is his story? His shots are probably not up to date and he has not been neutered. He is a quiet, sweet and gentle dog. I haven’t heard a wail or bark at all from him and he has plenty of reason to whine.
There are 4 million dogs abandoned annually in the U.S. alone. Many of these dogs are put to death because selfish, greedy people keep breeding dogs. They flood the market with more puppies to make more money and silly people reward them by buying high-priced puppies and dogs from pet stores, newspaper ads or online.
I’m the first to say that it’s certainly important to teach people how to care for the animals they love. But once you make a real connection with animals and you want to do what’s right for them, a sense of responsibility is an easy next step.
Laddie is the model of loyalty and affection and available for adoption from the Humane Society of Northwest Indiana providing his owner doesn’t claim him.
