Hi Ollie: Is your real name Oliver? Were you named after Oliver Norvelle Hardy?
The reason I am asking is because you show a good sense of humor and a quick wit in writing your column. I thought you may have gotten your comedic talent from watching the late great comedy team of Laurel and Hardy. Ollie and Stanley sure made people laugh.
I am sure you know laughter is music to the soul.
A Faithful Reader
Dear Faithful Reader: There is nothing I like better than answering a fan letter that gives me the opportunity to talk about myself.
Maybe I should say, yes, you are right, my real name is Oliver Norvelle Hardy. But sadly, that would be a big fat lie.
Let me explain. I was the first of what was supposed to be a three-dog family with the names Ollie, Fran and Kukla.
Well, as time went on, she kept rescuing and adopting animals and none was female. So the Kukla, Fran and Ollie idea went out the window. The next dog in the house was low to the floor with a very bad underbite. He looked like Oscar the Grouch on “Sesame Street” so his name became Oscar.
It was peaceful for a while until the “one dog too many” came along in 2008. Here was a yorkie-poo that was so cute he could get anything he wanted without even having to act like a dog.
Oh my, she thought, we need to give him another “O” name so he can fit in with the family.
She came up with the name Opie Taylor. This whining, spoiled dog is named after Ronnie Howard’s character on the “Andy Griffith Show.” Really, this is the only dog I know with two names.
I have been Ollie for seven years and I’m used to it.
This last year, we fostered Brittany, Pippin, Jade, Puffin, Penny, etc. but none of them had an “O” name so they didn’t stay here very long. My woman human found them homes through Lakeshore Paws and the Humane Society of Northwest Indiana. Whew.
Then along came a black and white Pomeranian named Laddie that bit three people. My woman human was intrigued. Is he a biter, she wondered, or was he just scared when he was cornered? I felt sure he would be on his way after a month. But no, he was renamed Pomtini after a pomegranate cocktail.
He’s still here and he doesn’t have an “O” name. OMG, are we starting a new set? Will there be Tequila and Captain Morgan joining Pomtini? I hope not, my patience is wearing extremely thin.
