John Grochowski, a Chicago-based writer and editor, has been covering the casino industry since 1994, when he launched a weekly gaming column in the Chicago Sun-Times that today also runs in the Post-Tribune. A syndicated version goes out to the Denver Post and a variety of Web sites, including Casino City Times.
John has worked in journalism since 1975, and since 1982 has been a copy editor at the Sun-Times. With the beginnings of riverboat gambling in the early 1990s, he added the casinos column to his duties.
In addition to the weekly column, John writes regularly for a number of player-oriented magazines, including Midwest Gaming and Travel, Strictly Slots, Casino Player, Southern Gaming and Destinations, and Casino Pulse. He’s also a regular in the casino industry trade publications Casino Journal and Slot Manager. He has written six books on casinos and casino games: “The Casino Answer Book; The Slot Machine Answer Book”; “The Video Poker Answer Book”; “The Craps Answer Book”; “Gaming: Cruising the Casinos,” and “Winning Tips for Casino Games.”
You can hear his Beat the Odds tips Tuesday through Friday afternoons on WLS, 890-AM in Chicago, with podcasts at http://www.wlsam.com/sectional.asp?id=38069. His own Web site, www.casinoanswerman.com, is somewhat irregularly updated. He can be reached by e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org.
John grew up in Lisle, Ill., and graduated from Lisle High School before attending the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. He resides in Elmhurst, Ill., with his wife and son. His biggest win came not in the casinos, but on ABC’s “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire,” where he won $125,000 while sitting in the hot seat opposite Regis Philbin.
