Maggie Wagner celebrated her 106th birthday Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012.

Affectionately called “Mother,” she was joined by family and friends for the celebration. She received her favorite dinner, flowers, presents, cake, and many cards and well wishes.

Wagner also received birthday greetings from President Barack Obama and Rep. Peter Visclosky, D-Merrillville.

Originally from Georgia, Wagner lived a vibrant, active life in Chicago for almost 60 years.

In 2000, at age 94, she relocated to Gary and lived with James and Theresa Baker, her only child and his wife. James Baker died in 2008, however, Theresa and the extended family continue to care for Wagner at home.

When Wagner was asked how she was able to reach 106, she said “I don’t know. Ask the good Lord! I just thank Him. I did the best I could to be nice to everybody.”
