Gary teen’s sagging pants leads to felony charge
GARY — A Lew Wallace High School student told to pull up his sagging pants became belligerent and aggressive and has been charged with a felony for his response, court records show.
De’Auntra Liggins, 18, of 3747 Washington St., is charged with battery resulting in bodily injury.
Liggins was arrested and was being held at the Lake County Jail after Detective JerVean Gates obtained the felony charge last week.
A school security officer told Gates he told Liggins to pull up his pants during class Sept. 13.
“Liggins’ pants were hanging down below his buttocks, which is a violation of school policy,” the probable cause affidavit states.
The teen refused and started to curse at the security officer who then began to escort the student to the principal’s office.
“Instead of going to the office, Liggins turned around and walked out of the school,” the affidavit states.
When the guard stopped him, Liggins turned and “started charging at him.” The guard grabbed Liggins in a bear hug and moved him to the office when Liggins “bit him on the left wrist.”
