Retired Purdue president named Hoosier living legend
WEST LAFAYETTE (AP) — A former Purdue University president will be honored as an Indiana living legend next month.
Purdue says Steven Beering will be recognized by the Indiana Historical Society during a July 19 gala at the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center in Indianapolis.
The organization annually honors selected Hoosiers for their statewide and national accomplishments.
Beering was Purdue’s president from 1983 to 2000. Before his Purdue appointment, he was dean of the Indiana University School of Medicine and director of the IU Medical Center in Indianapolis.
During his time at Purdue, more than 30 buildings on the West Lafayette campus were constructed, expanded or renovated.
