SOUTH BEND — The Basilica of the Sacred Heart on the University of Notre Dame campus will be closed for three weeks after Christmas for renovations, including installing new slate tile flooring to improve acoustics.

The Rev. Peter Rocca, the basilica’s director, said that since the basilica was renovated in the early 1960s it has been carpeted.

He said the original tile floor provided a more resonant space, especially for singing and the performance of organ and choral pieces.

He said the new tiling will enhance the acoustics and eliminate the need to replace the carpeting every 10 to 15 years.

The basilica will close Dec. 26 and reopen for the Vigil Mass on Jan. 18.
