CHESTERTON — A 7-year-old boy who admitted setting fire to a neighbor’s greenhouse was described as having multiple mental health issues, authorities said.

His mother told police the boy has “ADHD, mood problems, anger problems and other types of issues.” On Saturday morning, the victim, of the 1300 block of Lake Drive, northeast of Chesterton, discovered the damage to his plastic greenhouse.

The clear plastic cold frame lining, a section of the flooring, a wagon and a bag of wood chips were damaged by fire, for an estimated loss of $335, police said.

The owner immediately let police know a local child had been acting out for the past few weeks.

When questioned by police, the 7-year-old said he started the fire a few days before, “because I was mad.” A young girl was with him at the time but did not take part, according to the police report, although the boy said, “She just told me to light it on fire.”

The greenhouse’s owner did not want to pursue criminal charges.
