Indiana Senate backs bill on officeholder limits

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — People who work for cities, towns or counties would no longer be allowed to hold political offices in those government units under a bill approved by the Indiana Senate.
Senators voted 39-11 in favor of the bill on Monday. The bill allows police officers, firefighters and other government workers to complete their current terms in offices such as city or county council seats but not allow them to hold both positions beyond that.
Bill sponsor Sen. Connie Lawson of Danville says the bill also prohibits volunteer firefighters from serving on a township board or other council that oversees the volunteer department’s budget.
Supporters say the proposal would eliminate conflict of interests from government workers also overseeing spending by their employer.
The bill now goes to the House for consideration.
