Senate backs uncontested candidate law change

Updated: January 24, 2012 7:58PM

INDIANAPOLIS — The state Senate has voted unanimously in favor of reversing an Indiana law that strips the names of unopposed candidates from city and town election ballots.

Senators voted 50-0 on Tuesday to change the law that drew complaints from candidates and election officials around the state who argued that all elected offices should appear on voting ballots regardless of the number of candidates.

The provision taking those candidates off the ballot was part of a large bill of election law changes that legislators approved last year. Its sponsor says it was aimed at saving money by eliminating the uncontested elections.

The bill now goes to the House for consideration.
