Indiana right-to-work foes object to vote’s speed

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Opponents of Indiana’s right-to-work bill say Republicans are trying to shut off public debate by rushing the matter through the Legislature within the next week.

The Republican leader of the state Senate says he expects a final vote Wednesday on the divisive legislation following a Monday committee hearing on the bill.

Indiana AFL-CIO president Nancy Guyott says union members will continue to talk with Republican senators in hopes of persuading more to vote against the bill, but that the Senate’s speed is aimed at shutting out the public.

Senate Democratic leader Vi Simpson says Republicans simply hope to send the bill “with wings” to Gov. Mitch Daniels for him to sign into law before the Feb. 5 Super Bowl in Indianapolis.
