Excise police arrest 218 during Super Bowl week

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — State excise police say they arrested 218 people in Indianapolis during Super Bowl week, about half for underage drinking.

Plainclothes officers made the arrests in downtown areas such as the Super Bowl Village, the Convention Center and Lucas Oil Stadium from Jan. 29 through Feb. 5. Underage drinkers accounted for 120 of those arrested. The rest were for charges including public intoxication, fake IDs and marijuana possession.

The Department of Public Safety reported 12 arrests on game night. Deputy Police Chief Michael Bates says most were for public intoxication and fighting.

Police say they observed a relatively calm crowd throughout the game week. Organizers say more than 1 million people visited the Super Bowl Village over 10 days.
