WEDDLEVILLE (AP) — One of the oldest surviving high school buildings in Indiana now has a listing on the National Register of Historic Places.

Carr High School in Weddleville was built in 1857 and served as a school in the community about 90 miles southwest of Indianapolis until 1934. It then served as a church before being abandoned in the 1960s.

The Weddleville Cemetery Association acquired the building from the Seymour Heritage Foundation in 2007 and has worked since to restore the schoolhouse.

Association President Paul Darkis says the work includes a new roof and windows, repainting the first floor to cover graffiti and tuck-pointing the bricks on the building.

The building is an example of an early settler-era one-room schoolhouse.
