Seven people were rescued from Lake Michigan break wall late Sunday after their boat struck the structure off of Calumet Beach on the Far South Side near the Indiana border.
The U.S. Coast Guard responded about 11:20 p.m. after the boat collided with the rock break wall about a half-mile to a mile off the beach at East 98th Street, according to a Coast Guard Calumet District petty officer.
The boat had been at Northerly Island for a concert and began heading south when the drivermay have become confused about his location due to the night-time conditions, according to the Coast Guard. Similiar incidents happen a few times each summer because motorists don’t know the area well enough.
Seven people were rescued, the petty officer said. All seven were on the break wall when the Coast Guard rescuers arrived. The Chicago Fire Dept. treated and released all seven at the scene, according to Fire Media Affairs.
The driver of the boat, Mark Jandura, 27, of Palos Hills, was cited for reckless operation of a motor boat, police News Affairs Officer Darryl Baety said.
