16 women apply for Indiana Supreme Court vacancy

INDIANAPOLIS — More than 70 percent of the applicants for an upcoming vacancy on the Indiana Supreme Court are women, opening the chance for the state to have just its second female justice ever.
Indianapolis attorney Karen Celestino-Horseman said women make up half the state’s population and deserve representation on the high court. She said she was delighted to see 16 of the 22 applicants are women.
Seven are sitting judges and the rest are attorneys. They are seeking to fill the seat being vacated by Frank Sullivan.
Indiana’s sole female justice was Myra Selby, who served for five years before stepping down in 1999.
A judicial nominating commission will narrow the 22 candidates to the final three from which Gov. Mitch Daniels will make his decision.
