GARY — A 10-month-old boy fell from a third-story window while his mother slept in their apartment Tuesday morning.

Kyan Powell was flown from The Methodist Hospitals Northlake campus to Chicago “due to the extent of his injuries,” police spokeswoman Cpl. Gabrielle King said.

Although police initially arrested Tiesha Powell, 26, she was released almost immediately as police decided the child’s injuries were not the result of neglect.

Detective Cpl. Roberto Figueroa “went to the house and did his investigation” and “feels confident it was an accident,” King said.

King did not state if any other adults were present at the apartment when the child fell.

A first-floor resident of the apartment building in the 500 block of Van Buren Street heard a baby crying about 7:40 a.m. and recognized the child as Powell’s.

The neighbor called an ambulance for the child.

Police called Child Protective Services to the scene, but no information was available on what, if any, action the investigator took.

The baby apparently fell from a window with a loose screen.

The boy’s condition was unknown Tuesday night.
