Crown Point dentist indicted in health fraud case

Updated: September 18, 2012 6:19AM

An Amarillo, Texas, dentist who also sees patients in Crown Point has been indicted in an alleged $1.5 million Medicaid scheme.

Prosecutors in Amarillo say 63-year-old Dr. Michael David Goodwin was indicted Wednesday on 11 counts of health care fraud.

Investigators say the orthodontist billed the government program for more services than provided or for unnecessary procedures. The time frame was 2008 through March 2011.

The indictment says employees sometimes scheduled more than 100 patients per day at times when Goodwin was not to be in the office.

Prosecutors say unqualified dental assistants did some procedures. Some dentists not enrolled in the Medicaid program allegedly provided care on behalf of Goodwin.

Goodwin could not immediately be reached for comment Thursday.
