SOUTH BEND (AP) — Two candidates competing for the congressional seat being vacated by Rep. Joe Donnelly have started running sharply critical ads against each other.

Republican former state Rep. Jackie Walorski started airing an ad Tuesday describing Democrat Brendan Mullen as a “D.C. insider” who was recruited by liberals to move to Indiana to run for Congress.

Mullen started airing an ad Thursday that features Osceola resident Chad Gibson, who attended West Point with Mullen. Gibson says Walorski should be ashamed of herself for smearing Mullen. The ad also describes Walorski as a “career politician.”

The South Bend Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/RHFe6M ) each campaign claims the commercials are not attack ads.

Mullen is a South Bend resident who served in Iraq. Jimtown resident Walorski narrowly lost to Donnelly two years ago
