The Indiana Department of Transportation will not make a scheduled presentation on the proposed Illiana expressway before the Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission on Wednesday.
John Swanson, NIRPC executive director, said his agency was notified by INDOT that representatives would not be available for the presentation slated for the 9 a.m. meeting at the Cedar Lake Community Center, 9800 W. 129th Ave. Swanson said he is trying to reschedule the presentation for the commission’s Dec. 13 executive board meeting in Portage.
Swanson said during its meeting Wednesday NIRPC staff will review its process regarding the proposed road from the commission’s standpoint.
“It’s not included in one of the funded projects in the 2040 plan,” Swanson said.
Several things would have to happen before the project would be included in the 2040 plan such as establishing a funding source for the construction of the project. NIRPC would also want to look into issues such as air quality and local impact.
“We have to see where the money would come from to actually be able to construct the project,” Swanson said.
