GARY -- Five people, including at least one teenager, were injured Thursday night when a church van carrying 12 people flipped over near an entrance ramp to the Indiana Toll Road, WMAQ Channel 5 is reporting.
Authorities told the station that 12 people were in the Hammond Baptist Church van when it flipped on Cline Avenue near the Gary Avenue entrance ramp to the Toll Road in Gary.
“As I was coming around the ramp I saw somebody jumping up and down with blood all over their face saying, ‘Help! Somebody’s trapped underneath the car,’ ” one woman who came upon the crash told the NBC affiliate.
Five people were transported to an area hospital, including a 17-year-old who was ejected from the vehicle, according to The Lake County Sheriff’s office, the station reported.
The station says that the teen was rushed to the Gary Airport and then flown by helicopter to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Ill.
The van was carrying a number of children and teens. There were several pieces of sporting equipment in the vehicle.
The van was the only vehicle involved in the crash, the station said.
