INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana’s two largest cities saw little change in their number of homicides for the past year.
Indianapolis officials say the city had 108 homicide cases during 2012, with four more in other Marion County communities. The Indianapolis Star reports the city’s total is the same as 2011 and down significantly from the 151 homicides it saw in 2006.
Fort Wayne, meanwhile, had 28 homicides last year, compared to 20 in 2011 and 28 in 2010. The Journal Gazette reports 17 of last year’s Fort Wayne homicides remain unsolved, although police Sgt. Carl Moore said many of those investigations were ongoing.
Indianapolis police chief Rick Hite says he believes the city’s homicide rate will go down with programs such as those combatting domestic violence and trying to reduce retaliatory shootings.
