Man held without bond in rape and robbery case

Updated: May 5, 2013 2:58PM

A South Side Chicago man was ordered held without bond Wednesday for allegedly sneaking into a woman’s car at an Indiana gas station and then raping and robbing her a few miles away in Chicago.

“There is no amount of money I can set that would keep the world safe from you,” Cook County, Ill., Judge Adam Bourgeois Jr. sternly told a dreadlocked Deverick Alex, who continually turned to look at loved ones attending his bond hearing.

Alex allegedly snuck into the back seat of the victim’s unlocked Dodge Caravan while she stopped at a gas station in Hammond to get gas, coffee and cigarettes on the morning of March 22, assistant state’s attorney Joell Zahr said.

As she made her way to work in Evergreen Park, Ill., the 26-year-old woman noticed movement in the van and saw a man wearing a ski mask, varsity-styles jacket and a Chicago Bulls hoodie move to the middle seat so he was directly behind her, Zahr said.

“Bitch, keep driving,” Alex allegedly told the woman, threatening to stab and kill her if she didn’t comply to his orders.

He eventually directed her to an alley at 95th Street and Colfax Avenue in Chicago, Zahr said.

There, Alex pulled the woman by her hair, forced her in the middle seat and sexually assaulted her while she begged for him not to hurt her so she could go home and see her son, Zahr said.

Alex used a condom during the attack and after assaulting the woman, he placed it in a plastic bag and then into his pocket, Zahr said.

Alex then forced the woman to call her bank and find out how much money she had in her account before ordering her to withdraw $140 from an ATM machine at a nearby gas station, authorities said.

Before she went out to get the cash, Alex allegedly told the victim that he memorized her address and would kill her son if she sought help.

When the woman got back in the van, Alex took her cell phone and ordered her to stop the vehicle at 89th Street and Lowe Avenue where he got out with her money, phone and gold ring, Zahr said.

The woman ended up calling police and was taken to the hospital.

Alex, who was recently arrested on the South Side, was caught on surveillance video at the Hammond gas station wearing the clothes the victim had described on her attacker, Zahr said.

Phone records also show that he placed calls to acquaintances with the woman’s phone before he exited the van, Zahr said.

Those calls helped in his arrest, Zahr said.

Alex also allegedly admitted to someone about the rape and robbery.

Alex is currently on parole for a 2007 vehicular hijacking and armed robbery in which he made deadly threats to his victim.

Deverick, of the 300 block of 92nd Street, is facing kidnapping, aggravated criminal sexual assault and aggravated robbery charges for the alleged March 22 incidents.
