GREENCASTLE (AP) — Greencastle’s fire chief says although an investigation continues into a blaze that gutted buildings near its courthouse square last month, it was apparently accidental.
The May 17 fire in downtown Greencastle was centered in a row of older two-story brick structures and ultimately damaged seven buildings as crews needed a few hours to extinguish it.
The Banner Graphic reports Fire Chief Bill Newgent says the blaze likely began somewhere in the roof area along a back porch, possibly around a ceiling fan.
Newgent told city council members that the buildings are stable and rebuilding activity has started in them.
No injuries were reported from the fire in the city about 40 miles west of Indianapolis.
