MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) — Ball State University police are investigating reports that an armed person might be on campus and have advised students and faculty to seek safety.
The university issued an alert Friday evening saying that a “possible armed assailant” was reported in the area of the Muncie campus’s Student Recreation and Wellness Center.
The school says campus police are securing the recreation building and connected facilities and that students and staff in several buildings should secure themselves in a safe location until police clear the area.
The Star Press reports that there are no reports of gunfire.
Ball State officials did not immediately return a phone call seeking additional information.
Tweets from @Ball State Alert indicated that police were continuing to assess the threat and were searching buildings including HP, Worthen Arena, Lewellen Hall and the Rec Center. The Tweet, sent at about 6:30 Muncie time, said the search should take another hour.
The report of an explosion was apparently the accidental discharge of a police firearm, according to @Ball State Alert.
