GARY

School Cleanup Event: Gary Community School Corp. is hosting another event aimed at increasing school spirit throughout the community. In the wake of the Back-to-School Fest that was held Tuesday, an inaugural districtwide cleanup, “Operation Curb Appeal,” is slated for 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. Plans call for cleaning up the landscapes of all 14 schools in the various districts in Gary. For information on volunteering and/or donating cleaning supplies, contact Charmella Greer at 881-5481 or Urban Teacher Education Program executive director Rochelle Brock at 980-6889 or email Brock at brock2@iun.edu. “From pulling weeds to planting flowers, mowing the lawns and picking up debris ... We are asking the citizens to give back to the schools and the students,” Brock said. She said organizers also were reaching out to businesses, churches and the city for supplies. “Through a project called Cultural Community Forces and Schools, this allowed my students (at Indiana University Northwest) to be in charge of learning projects. I decided that this summer, the students would reach out to the community to help,” Brock said, adding that the Youth Services Bureau and Teach for America have signed up. “We want at least 10 to 20 volunteers per school site.”
