INDIANAPOLIS — Embattled Republican Indiana Secretary of State Charlie White has recused himself from Indiana Recount Commission deliberations on his own case.
The Indianapolis Star reports that White sent a letter to Indiana Republican Chairman Eric Holcomb on Monday saying he won’t participate in any discussions on whether he’s eligible to remain in office.
A judge last week ruled the recount commission shouldn’t have dismissed a Democratic challenge to White’s eligibility in December. Since then, White has been indicted on vote fraud and other felony counts.
The recount commission usually consists of the secretary of state and one member appointed by each of the two major state party chairmen. Officials say Indiana law prevents White from hearing his own case, so his replacement also will be appointed by the GOP chairman.
