Do-not-call list may expand to users of cell phones

Updated: August 4, 2011 4:20PM

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana residents who use only their cell phones will be able to add those numbers to the state’s do-not-call registry to block unwanted telemarketing calls under a bill awaiting Gov. Mitch Daniels’ signature.

The bill amends the state’s do-not-call law to allow residents to register their cell phones, prepaid wireless calling and web-based phone services so long as the number is used as their residential lines.

Attorney General Greg Zoeller says many people now use cell phones instead of land lines and that those residents also should be protected.

The Courier-Journal in Louisville, Ky., reports that telemarketers who contact registered cell phone users will face the same penalties as those who call a registered land line.
